The mysterious disappearance of the Long Spined Black Sea Urchins (Diadema antillarum) has left marine biologists and divers alike perplexed and concerned. Once abundant and considered a nuisance, these sea urchins have now become a vital part of the ecosystem, playing a crucial role in maintaining the health of coral reefs. Gary Rose MD, a certified diver and marine biologist, reflects on the dramatic changes he has witnessed in the South Atlantic waters of South Florida over the past five decades. He vividly recalls the vibrant and healthy reefs of the 1970s, teeming with colorful fish and majestic coral formations. The reefs were a sight to behold, with clear water visibility up to 125 feet, and a diverse array of marine life. Among the most striking features were the vast carpets of Long Spined Black Sea Urchins, their spines easily piercing human skin. These urchins were a constant presence, grazing on algae and preventing it from suffocating the young coral. However, in 1983, a catastrophic event unfolded. The skies darkened with a grey-yellow haze, and divers began noticing a disturbing trend: the Long Spined Black Sea Urchins were losing their spines and disappearing. This was the first wave of massive coral bleaching, which stretched from Florida to the Caribbean. The cause was initially attributed to excessive heat, pesticides, and other pollutants, but the real culprit was the Sahara dust, laden with pesticides and nutrients, leading to excessive algae growth. The disappearance of Diadema antillarum was a warning sign, as these urchins are vital grazers, keeping algae in check and allowing coral to thrive. The decline in Diadema populations coincided with the bleaching of coral reefs, leaving them vulnerable to algae overgrowth. Over the next two decades, the reefs began to recover, and Diadema slowly made a comeback, albeit in smaller numbers. But the respite was short-lived. In 2022, massive Saharan dust clouds returned, and a mass mortality of Diadema was documented in the US Virgin Islands. Within months, the die-off spread across the Caribbean and Florida, resulting in the death of over 95% of Diadema populations. Scientists identified the culprit as the ciliated organism Philaster apodigitiformis, a parasite that infects the sea urchins, causing them to lose their spines and eventually die. This discovery has led to renewed efforts to manage the crisis and prevent future outbreaks, with the hope of restoring the vibrant and healthy carpets of Diadema to our coral reefs.
